about

The Mokkatum cliffs run along the eastern side of old Cairo and dominate the Eastern horizon of the city. They tower over the minarets of the old Islamic area of Cairo and they even tower over the Citadel of Salah El Din (Saladin). Ancient quarries provided stones used to build the walls of Cairo and even the ancient pyramids at Giza.

Atop the cliffs is a neighborhood with broad views of the Nile Valley and Historic skyline of Cairo. Villas and beautiful apartment buildings trace the lip of the cliffs glinting in the sunset. At the base of the cliffs is the famed area called Manshayet Nasr, also known as Garbage City, where Cairo's trash is sorted and processed.

The cliffs highlight the different lives lived in Egypt. They accent the uniqueness and beauty of Cairo's medieval architecture. Their chisel marks bring ancient peoples days back to life.
